As a neutral state, Austria occupied a special position during the Cold War. Not least for this reason, discussion forums for scientists from East and West were institutionalised here. The International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA) and the Institute for Human Sciences (IWM), among others, served as examples of this.

The research project will examine how the process of exchanging and transferring conflicting political and economic concepts and ideas has taken place at these two departments since the 1970s and what impact these expert interactions had on decision-making processes and decision-makers during the Cold War, as well as on economic developments in both East and West until the 1990s.
