On the initiative of and financed by ASFINAG, the Austrian Society for Contemporary History is conducting a research project to study the early history of motorways in Austria between 1935 and 1950. The main is on the first phase of motorway construction under National Socialist rule from 1938, the halting of construction in 1941/42 due to the war, and the end of the war in 1945. Particular areas of focus of the study are the working world, employment policy and forced labour of foreign civilian workers and prisoners of war. The history of the period from the mid-1930s onwards is also taken into account, as well as the developments in the first years after the war, which form the transition between the phase of the Nazi autobahn construction and that of the Second Republic.

Project objective:

Creation of a final report that can be published in a scientific journal.
