Forms of transnational exchange between social movements and, in particular, practices of translation and travel in and between women's movements are at the centre of this project. It uses the biographical example of the German women's rights activist, writer and politician Käthe Schirmacher (1865-1930), who was a multilingual translator, journalist and well-travelled activist around 1900 and promoted exchange between women's movements in Europe and in the transatlantic region, to examine travel and translation practices in their specific contexts. The case study aims to analyse conditions of multiple transfers of concepts and strategies across linguistic and national borders and to make visible the relevance of transnational mediation practices for social and political movements.

Feminismus übersetzen. Biographische Praktiken und Kulturen der transnationalen Vermittlung vor dem Ersten Weltkrieg

Formen des transnationalen Austauschs zwischen sozialen Bewegungen und insbesondere Praktiken des Übersetzens und des Reisens in und zwischen Frauenbewegungen stehen im Zentrum dieses Projekts. Es nutzt das biografische Beispiel der deutschen Frauenrechtlerin, Schriftstellerin und Politikerin Käthe Schirmacher (1865-1930), die um 1900 als mehrsprachigen Übersetzerin, Journalistin und weitgereiste Aktivistin den Austausch zwischen Frauenbewegungen in Europa und im transatlantischen Raum vorangetrieben hat, um Reise- und Übersetzungspraktiken in ihren spezifischen Kontexten zu untersuchen. Die Fallstudie zielt darauf, Bedingungen der vielfältigen Transfers von Konzepten und Strategien über Sprach- und Ländergrenzen hinweg zu analysieren und die Relevanz von transnationalen Vermittlungspraktiken für soziale und politische Bewegungen sichtbar zu machen.
