Dr. Richard Germann
Univ.-Assistent Post-Doc
(Maternity cover 17.10.2022 – 13.05.2023)
Richard Germann is a contemporary historian specialising in 20th-century Austrian history (from the late monarchy to the present), which he approaches with critical military, social and political historical questions. The era of the world wars is a particular focus of his research. In 2006, Germann completed his doctorate on the topic: "Austrian" Soldiers in Eastern and Southeastern Europe 1941 - 1944. German Warriors - National Socialist Criminals - Austrian Victims?". Since then, he has continued to develop the question of the participation in and responsibility of "Austrian" members of the Wehrmacht during the Second World War using various methodological approaches (e.g. a project on the perception of war together with G. Botz, S. Neitzel and H. Welzer 2009 - 2014).
Currently, Germann is working together with Dr. Ottmar Traşcă (Romanian Academy of Sciences/Cluj) on a critically annotated edition of the memoirs of Colonel Erich Rodler, who, as an Austrian intelligence officer in the Imperial and Royal Army/the Austrian Armed Forces/the Wehrmacht (foreign reconnaissance 1914–1944) maintained excellent networks in the successor states of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy.
